Whether you have a successful business or a struggling start up, everyone needs to put time into marketing themselves. It’s a skill that often gets put to the side because there just aren’t enough hours in the day to dedicate time to it. Now there is time with our 6 easy steps to start marketing yourself like the star you are.
1) Educate, don’t sell
People love to buy, but they hate to be sold things. Nobody likes a pushy salesman; they may sit and nod while you’re talking to them but in reality, your potential customer is just trying to remember their grocery list. Your goal, every single interaction, should be to educate people about your product/service. This is a chance to share your knowledge and prove that you are the ultimate expert in your field. Show people why they need your product.
2) Know your UVP
UVP, or unique value proposition, is a clear statement of the value you offer to customers, how you can fulfill their needs, and what distinguishes you from the competition. How do you create value? What makes you unique? These questions need to be answered on every website page, social media post, or piece of content you create. More importantly, these questions should be answered throughout every interaction with customers.
3) Show some personality
Don’t be a pushy salesman, but don’t be boring either! Always let your personality shine through to let people know who you really are. It’s not about being a happy, ray of sunshine 24/7; it’s about being yourself. That is one thing that sets you apart from the competition: there’s only one you, no one can copy that. Be creative, extroverted, introverted, loud, or soft spoken; whichever your personality is, it can be used to your advantage.
4) Be seen
No one is going to know who you are if you’re never out marketing yourself or making connections. Be involved in community and local events to make sure your face is known. Go to conventions or other educational opportunities to learn and meet other experts in your field. Introducing yourself to new people is a step in the right direction.
5) Build a community
People long to be a part of communities; it’s a sense of home. Communities allow people with similar interests and passions to come together and discuss. This community can be in person or online. Our article on Facebook groups shows how meaningful and important these communities can be. In order build this community, you have to have a product or service that is very niche. It has to be unique and different, it can’t appeal to everyone.
6) Have a positive social presence
In this day and age, if you don’t have any social media presence, you’re going to have a tough time getting your name out there. You don’t have to have every social media account under the sun but making an impact on one or two platforms can boost your morale. Social media is a huge part of our lives so to be remarkable, you have to craft meaningful and relevant content for your followers. This is an excellent outlet to show your expertise and fill a need. Once again, it’s not about selling, it’s about educating. It takes time and dedication to maintain an impactful social account, so start slow and show the world how unique you are.
